Dissatisfaction with one’s breasts is such a common problem that correcting it has become one of the most popular plastic surgeries. Breast augmentation usually uses saline or silicone implants to enhance the shape, size, and symmetry of your breasts. This surgery does require some recovery time, but following your surgeon’s instructions will help you heal quickly and without complications.

What is Breast Augmentation?

While many people think that breast augmentation is only to add volume, it can accomplish much more. This form of breast surgery usually uses implants that not only add size, but can also create improved shape and projection while correcting asymmetry. Many different techniques are used depending on your needs. Your Longwood Plastic Surgery team will review all your options and help you choose the best one for you.

When Can I Sleep on My Side After Breast Augmentation?

The details of your breast augmentation recovery will depend on several factors, including:

  • The type of procedure
  • The size and type of implant
  • Your body’s natural healing abilities
  • How closely you follow your surgeon’s recovery plan

Sleep is important to recovery, and how you sleep can affect your healing. You will be provided with a surgical bra that you should wear at all times, including during sleep. You should also sleep with your upper body elevated, which will help reduce swelling and discomfort.

You should not sleep on your side immediately after breast augmentation since this position puts pressure on your healing breasts. Most people can start sleeping on their side again after three to four weeks but should continue to wear their surgical bra and support their breasts with pillows. You can expect to resume your usual routine within six to eight weeks.

What Types of Breast Implants are Available?

Breast implants may use saline or silicone to produce results. Each type has advantages and downsides. Many people feel that silicone looks and feels more like your natural breasts. However, saline implants contain sterile salt water, and some people feel more comfortable with them. Your surgeon will give you the opportunity to handle and feel different implant types and view potential results with 3D photography.

How Long Do Breast Augmentation Results Last?

Breast implants can last for many years, but they are not permanent. While many implants can last ten to fifteen years or longer, others will have them replaced sooner. Breast implant removal is a procedure that removes old or damaged implants. If desired, new implants will be placed at the same time. You may choose to have your implants removed due to textural changes, rippling, or hardening. You may also want to upgrade to a more suitable implant size or shape.
