The thin, flexible skin around your eyes can start to show signs of aging sooner than you think. Drooping eyelids can make you look less alert, and bags under your eyes can make you look tired. Blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift rejuvenates your eyes to restore a brighter, more youthful appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty or an Eyelid Lift?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is performed to address signs of aging around the eyes. This procedure can be performed on the upper, lower, or both eyelids to treat your concerns and provide an alert, well-rested look. People have blepharoplasty to treat sagging eyelid skin, puffy undereye bags, wrinkled or crepey eyelid skin, and drooping skin that can obscure your vision.

How is an Eyelid Lift Performed?

Blepharoplasty at Longwood Plastic Surgery is performed using one of several options for your comfort, including local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. The procedure can take one to three hours. Your surgeon will make small incisions hidden in a crease of the eyelid to make them nearly invisible. They will lift and tighten loose skin and muscles, then remove or reposition fat pads that have moved or become more visible.

How Long Does Blepharoplasty Last?

If you are considering an eyelid lift, its longevity is an important factor. Fortunately, blepharoplasty results are long-lasting. Most people enjoy their results for at least ten to fifteen years before they start to be bothered by signs of aging.

Some people may choose to have a second procedure at this point to refresh their results. Others will remain happy with the way their eyes look without another procedure. Although aging will progress, your eyelids will always look younger than they would have without the procedure.

What is Recovery Like After Blepharoplasty?

You will return home after your procedure to recover. You can expect some swelling and discomfort, especially during the first few days. Most people feel good enough to return to work and other light activities within five to seven days.

Avoid rubbing the eye area after your blepharoplasty. You can resume your exercise routine on a schedule determined by your LPS surgeon and based on your recovery process. You may have residual swelling for up to three months as your results continue to evolve.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

An eyelid lift can address moderate to significant signs of aging around the eyes for most healthy adults. Good candidates have achievable goals and understand the risks and benefits of the procedure. You should not have blepharoplasty if you have certain medical conditions that affect your eye health. People who are pregnant or have an eye infection should delay having this procedure.
