Microneedling

Is your beauty routine not producing the results it once did?

The signs of aging tend to sneak up on all of us over time. At first we don’t notice uneven tone, texture, fine lines, or wrinkles. Then, a closer look in the mirror reveals the truth: we no longer look as young as we feel. At Longwood Plastic Surgery, we can help you keep the signs of aging from gaining ground on your face (or neck, or hands) with microneedling.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Sometimes called Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that goes deeper than what over-the-counter exfoliators and seruma can achieve. Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away, age spots diminished, enlarged pores shrunk, and even acne scars are reduced. It works using tiny, sterile needles for the creation of micro-injuries whose purpose is to stimulate the skin’s healing response and collagen and elastin production. By creating microscopic punctures, your Longwood Plastic Surgery provider controls the depth and proximity of these channels, which replace the weakened or damaged collagen and elastin fibers beneath your skin’s surface. These new fibers act as your skin’s foundation and support structure, tightening and firming your tissues to smooth away wrinkles, tighten lax skin, and renew skin cells to replace dull, damaged cells. We apply a serum of hyaluronic acid (HA), a nutrient your body naturally produces to nourish and hydrate your skin, to restore suppleness and volume. You look younger with a more even skin tone and texture, and signs of aging that are slowly changing your appearance are turned back by years. Studies show that 6 months after 4 sessions, microneedling-treated skin experiences a 400% increase in collagen and elastin.

Microneedling rejuvenates the skin without harsh chemicals or lasers to:

  • Diminish fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and age spots
  • Reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Minimize acne scars or unwanted texture concerns
  • Improve the infusion of your skincare creams and serums, making them more effective

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling doesn’t react to skin pigmentation, which means it’s safe for patients with all ranges of skin color. Anyone seeking to improve the skin of their face, neck, décolletage, or even hands can undergo microneedling. A thorough consultation with a Longwood Plastic Surgery expert, including a complete medical history, will help determine if you’re a good candidate.

What is Microneedling Treatment Like?

Your microneedling treatment begins with the application of a topical numbing cream or ice so you’re as comfortable as possible. The microneedling pen, that comes with 12 ultra-fine needles, is used to create the controlled micro-injuries that prompt your natural healing response. Following the creation of micro-channels, an HA serum is applied to the skin. The micro-channels lead the serum to infuse deeper into your tissues, nourishing your skin and giving it volume where age has diminished it. While one treatment will give you visible improvement, a series of 3-6 treatments is often the best choice for optimizing your final results with microneedling.

What Results Will I See?*

Many of our patients notice an immediate luminosity to their skin following a microneedling treatment. Within 2 weeks, you’ll have clear evidence of a more even skin tone and texture. Your pores will be smaller, and fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes and mouth will be less visible. Any scarring or texture concerns will be smoothed away. A series of microneedling treatments results in accumulated improvement, which peaks 4-6 months following treatment due to boosted collagen and elastin production.

Is There Any Downtime?

Microneedling results in 12-24 hours of redness and tenderness, which can prompt patients to observe some social downtime. This should resolve quickly and on its own.
