Childbirth, age, or hormones can give you uncomfortable extra skin around your vagina. This skin is called the labia minora, and you can shorten and reshape it with a labiaplasty. More than a cosmetic issue, excessively long labia can cause physical discomfort during activities or intimacy.

What is a Labiaplasty?

The labia minora are flaps of skin on either side of the vagina. The area of the labia and vulva differ widely in appearance, and you may feel self-conscious about labia that fit well within the range of normal. The best candidates for labiaplasty feel deeply uncomfortable with their labia or experience physical problems. A labiaplasty will shorten excessively long labia, so they no longer cause issues or make you self-conscious.

How Does a Labiaplasty Work?

Your Longwood Plastic Surgery surgeon will perform the procedure under oral sedation or general anesthetic. Using experience and skill, your surgeon trims off the excess skin and creates an aesthetically pleasing result. The procedure usually takes one to two hours. Your surgeon will work with you before the procedure to determine what you want your results to look like.

How Much Does a Labiaplasty Cost?

Costs for plastic surgical procedures can be difficult to estimate. Providers have different pricing depending on the location and the provider’s experience. The estimated cost may not include surgical fees, anesthetic, or other expenses. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a labiaplasty is $3,053. Many different factors can influence your final price, so talk to your LPS surgeon for more information.

What Results Will I See With a Labiaplasty?

You will see shorter labia minora that no longer make you uncomfortable. People experience results including:

  • Greater comfort riding bikes or similar activities
  • No more pain during intercourse
  • Freedom to wear the clothes or swimsuits you want
  • An end to pinching and other painful experiences

A labiaplasty improves the appearance of the labia minora, protects them from irritation, and increases sexual confidence and enjoyment.

What is Recovery Like From a Labiaplasty?

You can go home the same day as your surgery. You will have pain medication and a topical antibiotic to use for the first few days. Each time you visit the bathroom, wash the area with warm water using a gentle, non-irritating cleanser. You can usually go back to work after about a week. You can resume more strenuous activities after about four weeks, and you can resume sexual intercourse in six to eight weeks.

“Dear Dr. Morris, I truly cannot thank you enough, not only for your extreme generosity and waving my surgery fees, but for being able to fix something that has been such a huge insecurity of mine for the past 20+ years.  My note was a relatively involved/difficult surgery and I am so grateful to you for doing it for me.* “
