You deserve to feel confident and secure in your body. Unfortunately, it can cause extreme emotional distress if your physical anatomy does not match your gender identity. And for some, hormone therapy isn’t enough to bridge the gap. That’s why Longwood Plastic Surgery specializes in top surgery to help achieve a body you feel comfortable and authentic in.

What is MTF Top Surgery (Male to Female?)

MTF top surgery is designed to create a more feminine chest for transgender people. For transwomen and non-binary transgender people, this reconstructive chest surgery can provide more feminine contours and increase body confidence. This is done with a breast augmentation procedure using breast implants.

How Does MTF Surgery Work?

Top surgery aims to craft an appearance that matches your identity, and consequently, our surgeons carefully customize the procedure to your needs. MTF top surgery usually uses breast implants to create a more feminine-looking chest. You will have multiple shapes, sizes, and styles of implants to choose from.

Your board-certified surgeon at Longwood Plastic Surgery will perform the procedure in one to two hours under general anesthesia. They will make incisions around the areola, under the breast tissue, or within the armpits to insert the implants. If you choose saline implants, these can often be inserted through smaller, more discreet incisions.

What to Expect After Male to Female Surgery

Patients can go home the same day with the help of a friend or family member. You’ll need to wear a surgical bra but won’t need any drainage tubes. Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal for a few days. We’ll give you aftercare instructions, including using ice packs and pain medication as needed.

Most patients can return to work or school within a week after MTF top surgery. We’ll instruct you to avoid strenuous activity for approximately two weeks.

The results of top surgery are immediate. However, swelling may initially obscure your outcome, and it takes time for your body to heal fully. You’ll enjoy the final results of the procedure after a few months when all swelling subsides.

Am I a Good Candidate for Top Surgery?

Patients should typically try hormone therapy for at least a year before undergoing transgender surgery. You may be a good candidate for trans surgery if you have tried hormone therapy and have not achieved your desired results. During a detailed consultation, one of our board-certified surgeons can help you determine if MTF surgery is right for you. You may be a good candidate for top surgery if you:

  • Have gender dysmorphia
  • Can provide a letter of recommendation from a mental health professional
  • Are living as a member of your gender identity group
  • Are an overall healthy non-smoker
  • Have realistic expectations

Dr. Morris–I just wanted to thank you for the great job you did on my surgery. It was exactly what I wanted and they actually look better than I thought they would…I am lucky someone recommended your name to me and I will do the same.
