Do You Have an Abdominal Wall Hernia That Has Lessened Your Quality of Life?

Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Experts at LPS

Abdominal wall reconstruction is a term used to describe the repair of complex, massive or recurrent hernias. This procedure is done in conjunction with a general surgeon and is performed in a hospital. These tend to be long, complicated procedures and patients undergoing them will need a multi-night hospital stay. Abdominal wall reconstruction is a specialized area of expertise at Longwood Plastic Surgery.

How Does Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Work?

Dr. Donald Morris and Dr. Derek Reformat are leading authorities with regard to abdominal wall reconstruction in Boston. Complex procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia allowing the procedure to be done safely and effectively. Over the course of two to six hours, your team will meticulously work to repair various layers of tissue, fat, and muscle within the abdominal wall for an optimal outcome.

Each patient needs a specialized surgical plan, which in some cases is multi-stepped. Drs. Morris and Reformat pay careful and close attention to formulate the best surgical plan for each patient in order to help restore their quality of life to pre-hernia.

Am I a Good Candidate for Abdominal Wall Reconstruction?

No two patients with a complex hernia are the same. Most patients who need abdominal wall reconstruction have had multiple abdominal surgeries and/or have additional medical problems. If you have been told by your previous surgeons that your hernia is not fixable, it might be time to consider enlisting the help of the physicians at Longwood Plastic Surgery. We repair what the others say cannot be done!

All patients who are undergoing a complex abdominal wall reconstruction will be required to go to pre-op testing to evaluate their fitness for this type of surgery. If you are a smoker, a nicotine test will be performed and a positive result will cause your surgery to be rescheduled until you have been off of nicotine for 6-weeks.

What Results Will I See?*

Ideally, after surgery, you will have the overall structure and functional integrity of your abdominal wall restored. The weakened abdominal wall will have been repositioned and reinforced ensuring an optimal outcome with long-lasting results. When done correctly, abdominal wall reconstruction has a high patient satisfaction rate with many patients experiencing little to no further discomfort or limited daily activities.

What is the Recovery Like?*

Recovery from abdominal wall reconstruction is unique to each patient. In most cases, you’ll be required to stay several nights in the hospital where you’ll be closely monitored. While some patients may feel comfortable returning to light activities in just several days, the majority of people opt to take 2-4 weeks off work. Weight restrictions and limited activity are typically in place for 6 weeks after your surgery.

We will create a post-operative recovery plan to help facilitate as smooth of a recovery as possible. It’s important to adhere to these instructions as well as scheduling and attending all follow-up visits with your physician.
