The female breast is not only a large part of the aesthetic beauty of women, it’s an iconic symbol of femininity and womanhood. For MtF patients, a breast augmentation is an important part of gender affirmation. At Longwood Plastic Surgery, we can help you become on the outside who you were always meant to be.

How Does a Breast Augmentation Work?

While hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can increase the size of the breasts, many transgender women and transfeminine non-binary people desire bigger, shapely breasts in proportion to the rest of their body. Longwood Plastic Surgery is pleased to help our MtF patients achieve this through breast augmentation during MtF top surgery. We can increase your breast fullness, add projection, and balance the breast-to-hip ratio. Your physician at LPS will discuss with you all the options for breast augmentation and chest feminization, including reviewing of types and sizes of implants and placement above or beneath the pectoralis muscle.

Am I a Good Candidate?

If you’re in general good health, have been on HRT for at least one year, and wish to feminize your chest and add volume to your breasts, you may qualify for breast augmentation at LPS. MtF top surgery, or chest feminization, is considered reconstructive, and Massachusetts insurance companies often cover the procedure.

What is the Procedure Like?

Longwood Plastic Surgery’s comfortable and private outpatient suite is where we perform most of our breast augmentations, so you’re safe in the hands of our compassionate and caring staff and physicians. Breast augmentation and chest feminization is done under general anesthesia, so you sleep through the procedure, which takes between 1-2 hours. You’ll immediately experience gender affirmation with a more feminine chest and larger breasts.

How Long Does Recovery from Breast Augmentation Take?

You’ll awaken with a surgical compression bra and, after a few hours of observation, will be released to recover at home. Depending on the extent of your reconstruction, you may not have drains, and will be able to shower within 48 hours. LPS board-certified surgeons use the most advanced techniques to maximize your outcome and ease your recovery. You’ll need to limit extensive physical activity for 2 weeks, but many of our patients return to non-strenuous jobs within a few days. As swelling subsides, you’ll be able to better see the woman you were always meant to be. It will take time for your body to heal, and it may be a few months to a year for your breasts to settle into their intended position. You’ll be free to resume energetic exercise and sexual activity after about 6 weeks. Some numbness is normal, though changes in sensation may last for up to 2 years.

No matter what stage you are along your transition journey, Longwood Plastic Surgery staff and physicians can help you affirm your gender identity and bring your outward appearance in line with your inner self. Transgender healthcare is often uncertain and unnecessarily difficult. We understand this and take pride in treating all our patients with the respect and compassion they deserve, no matter the procedure. For some patients, a breast augmentation is so much more than a cosmetic treatment. We are pleased to be a part of bringing your true self to light.
