Plump, glossy, kissable lips are everywhere you look, but if you have thin lips, you might feel left out. Whether your lips have lost volume with age or were never gifted with it in the first place, lip filler can give you the full but natural-looking enhancement that moves with your lips and boosts your confidence.

What is Lip Filler?

Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler designed for use in and around the lips. Fillers used in this area must have special properties, including flexibility and smoothness. At Longwood Plastic Surgery, we offer the Juvederm® family of fillers along with a variety of options. This widely used group of fillers produces results by replacing lost volume or adding definition and fullness.

How Do Juvederm® Lip Fillers Work?

During your lip filler treatment, your expert injector will inject your lips with one of several different types of fillers. Juvederm® fillers are made of a compound called hyaluronic acid that can form cross-links and chains. Hyaluronic acid is popular in skincare due to its ability to attract and hold onto moisture. When injected into your lips, it adds immediate volume and gives them a plumper, more luxurious appearance.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last?

How long a dermal filler lasts depends on its formula and what it needs to do. Dermal fillers used in areas like the cheeks must be dense and resilient to maintain shape and definition. Lip fillers, however, need to stay smooth and fluid, moving as your lips move so you can smile and talk without anyone knowing you had filler injected. Lip filler typically lasts up to a year, although results vary. A quality lip care product with sunscreen can help lip fillers last as long as possible.

Is There Any Downtime After Lip Filler?

You may notice minor swelling, bruising, or redness in the injection area that lasts up to a few days. No downtime is required, and you can return to work or your daily routine immediately. You can minimize the likelihood of bruising by avoiding NSAIDs like ibuprofen and some herbal supplements before your injections. Issues after Juvederm® fillers are extremely rare and usually easy to address.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lip Filler?

If you are considering lip fillers, you should meet a few criteria. Most fillers are approved for those over 21 years of age. Good candidates should have reasonable expectations and understand the benefits and risks. You should not use lip filler if you have an infection or have an active skin condition in the treatment area.

I was recommended to Dr. Morris through my doctor at BID-Needham. Due to prior surgeries, I had some issues and Dr. Morris is the best. He has done a fantastic job with my abdomen core and I feel and look fantastic.
