How Does CoolSculpting® Work?

CoolSculpting® is the innovation that body sculpting has been waiting for. Scientists have discovered that fat cells freeze at a temperature higher than that of surrounding tissues. By reducing the temperature of your unwanted fat cells to around 53°, Longwood Plastic Surgery certified practitioners can decrease those stubborn pockets of fat that targeted exercise, weightlifting, and eating healthy can’t seem to touch. The membrane of the fat cells is damaged, causing cellular death, and the body absorbs the remnants and filters them out through the normal metabolic process. The CoolSculpting® system has built in safeguards to regulate the temperature, ensuring surrounding tissues remain healthy and unaffected. The result? The sculpted, more toned appearance you’ve always wanted, without surgery or downtime.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Because CoolSculpting® is not approved as a treatment for significant weight loss or obesity, ideal candidates are generally in good health and within 30 pounds of their ideal weight. If you’re tired of gym time or your at-home regimen and not getting results and want your clothes to fit better, call LPS to schedule an in-depth consultation. Those fat pockets on your abdomen, thighs, and flanks don’t stand a chance.

What is the Procedure Like?

CoolSculpting® is non-invasive, and the cool temperatures have a numbing effect, so once the handpiece is attached to your treatment area and activated, you’ll experience no discomfort when the numbness takes effect. It takes between 35 minutes to 1 hour to complete treatment. While uncomfortable side effects are rare, patients can experience temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, and firmness from CoolSculpting® treatments. They subside quickly and you can get on with your active schedule immediately following your appointment.

How Long Do Results Last?

Because we are born with a fairly static number of fat cells, those frozen away by CoolSculpting® don’t get replaced. They’re gone for good. Since the body also filters out the dead cells naturally, other fat cells in the area shift to fill in the gaps, creating a smooth, shapely look to your treatment area without rippling or bumps.

Patients experience up to 25% fat loss after the first treatment, and many are happy with the results and stop there. Patients with higher fat loss goals may require 1-2 more treatments. Our bodies need a certain amount of cushioning to look healthy and vibrant, so the incremental fat loss of CoolSculpting® is slow enough to determine exactly how many treatments will result in your ideal silhouette. It takes a few weeks to filter out the dead cells, so peak results are visible 1-3 months after your final treatment. Your remaining fat cells are still able to increase in size with an increase in caloric intake and decrease in exercise, so weight gain will still be possible. It’s important to continue with an energetic lifestyle and a nutrient dense diet to enjoy long-term benefits of your CoolSculpting® results.

The Longwood Plastic Surgery staff are pleased to bring our patients the latest in cosmetic enhancement technology and innovation, and the science behind CoolSculpting® is undisputed. What have you got to lose besides the unwanted fat?
