Gynecomastia, or the development of enlarged male breasts, can significantly impact your confidence and comfort. At Longwood Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in gynecomastia surgery, helping men achieve a flatter, more masculine chest. Here’s everything you need to know about this transformative procedure.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by excess breast tissue in men, leading to enlarged male breasts. It can result from various factors, including hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations, certain medications, or genetics. While often associated with puberty, gynecomastia can affect men of any age.
The physical changes caused by gynecomastia may make men self-conscious, leading them to avoid activities like swimming or wearing fitted clothing. Gynecomastia surgery offers an effective solution by removing excess tissue and restoring a more contoured and masculine chest appearance.

How is Gynecomastia Surgery Done?
Gynecomastia surgery, also called male breast reduction, is tailored to address each patient’s unique needs.
Liposuction for Fatty Tissue: If your gynecomastia is primarily due to excess fatty tissue, your surgeon will use liposuction. This involves small incisions through which a thin cannula is inserted to suction out the fat.
Excision for Glandular Tissue: If your gynecomastia is caused by dense glandular tissue, the surgeon will make a small incision, typically along the edge of the areola, to remove this tissue.
Skin Tightening: In cases where significant sagging or loose skin is present, additional incisions may be required to tighten and reshape the chest.
The procedure usually takes about two hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Am I a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
You may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery if:
- You have persistently enlarged breasts that do not respond to diet or exercise.
- You are in good overall health and have no conditions that could impair healing.
- You have realistic expectations about the results.
For the best outcomes, underlying causes like hormonal imbalances or medication side effects should be addressed before surgery.
What is Recovery Like After Gynecomastia Surgery?
Recovery involves some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the first few days. A compression garment is typically worn to reduce swelling and support healing. Most patients return to work within a week, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for about four weeks.
Final results may take several months to appear as swelling subsides fully. Scars are usually minimal and fade over time.
How Long Will My Gynecomastia Surgery Results Last?
Gynecomastia surgery provides long-lasting results, but maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle is essential. Weight gain, hormonal changes, or certain medications could potentially cause a recurrence. Addressing these factors with your healthcare provider will help ensure lasting benefits.
