At Longwood Plastic Surgery, we believe that everyone deserves to enjoy life in a body that feels like their own. If you are transitioning to female or prefer a more feminine figure, male-to-female top surgery can help you achieve a body that aligns with your sense of self and makes you feel more comfortable.

What is Male-to-Female Top Surgery?

If your masculine chest affects how you feel about yourself and how others perceive you, you may benefit from top surgery. Male-to-female top surgery uses implants to create shapely, natural-looking breasts that give you a more feminine look.

Although the procedure may seem similar to breast augmentation surgery, your team at Longwood Plastic Surgery understands that this transformation requires special skills to help you achieve the breasts you desire.

Everything You Need to Know About Male-to-Female Top Surgery

Top surgery, or changing the appearance of the chest, is one of the most popular transgender surgeries. Male-to-female top surgery helps an individual who is transitioning from male to female achieve natural-looking, proportionate breasts. It can also help a nonbinary individual seeking a more feminine chest shape.

Am I a Good Candidate?

If you are considering top surgery, you should be in good health and have reasonable expectations. Most individuals who are confident in their transition and have been on hormone therapy for at least one year are good candidates for this procedure.

How is the Surgery Performed?

Breast implants can be placed in several ways. Your incisions may be made around the edge of the areola, in the area where the breast crease will be, or even in the underarm area. Your LPS surgeon will use implants that achieve a proportionate, feminine shape. Incisions are always hidden as much as possible for a natural-looking result.

What is Recovery Like?

Your new breasts may feel tight, swollen, and sore after the procedure. You will be fitted with a surgical bra to support them while they heal. If your job does not involve physical activity, you may return to work in as little as a few days. Strenuous activities should wait at least two weeks or until your surgeon approves it.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Male-to-female top surgery is a life-changing procedure, and results can last for decades. However, implants are not designed to last forever. Most will need to be replaced after ten to twenty years. Common issues include changes in implant texture or the formation of scar tissue around the implant. Your surgeon can discuss these potential concerns and what to do if they occur.

What are the Benefits?

Transgender and non-binary individuals can benefit in many ways from top surgery. Along with helping you feel more comfortable in your own body, it also changes how others respond to you, your perceived gender, and many other factors. For many, this procedure improves their quality of life and helps them live as the person they were meant to be.

Dear Dr. Morris, I truly cannot thank you enough, not only for your extreme generosity and waving my surgery fees, but for being able to fix something that has been such a huge insecurity of mine for the past 20+ years. My note was a relatively involved/difficult surgery, and I am so grateful to you for doing it for me.
