What is MtF Top Surgery?

MtF top surgery is a gender-affirming procedure that uses breast augmentation to give you the breasts that will help you feel more aligned with your true gender. Using advanced procedures, our experienced surgeons can help you achieve natural-looking breasts

Am I a Good Candidate for MtF Top Surgery?

If you are a trans woman or nonbinary and want to have feminine breasts, you may be a good candidate for MtF top surgery. People should also be mentally and emotionally prepared for the permanent changes of top surgery. At Longwood Plastic Surgery, we have worked with people through all steps of the MtF transition process.

Many people have spent years thinking about this surgery and feel very prepared. If you are ready and have been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for one year or longer, we look forward to helping you with your top surgery. We recommend that candidates stay in good physical health, avoid smoking before and after surgery, and make sure their surgeon knows about all of their medications.

How Does MtF Top Surgery Work?

Physically, MtF top surgery resembles a standard breast augmentation. You will need to be on HRT for one year prior to your top surgery. This will develop your breast tissue and give you better placement for the implants. The surgeon will use a small incision to insert the implants. You will have a wide choice of implants, including silicone and saline. Silicone implants offer a range of shapes with different amounts of projection to help you find the right ones for you.

Does Insurance Cover Top Surgery?

In Massachusetts, insurance covers most gender affirmation procedures. This alleviates tremendous stress for people trying to budget MtF top surgery. While each person has different insurance, you may find that a large part or even all of your procedure gets covered. This opens the doors for many people who have longed for MtF top surgery but have not known how to afford it. We can help most of our patients find out how to receive coverage for their procedure

How Long Does Recovery Take?

During recovery from MtF top surgery, you will feel the most discomfort during the first few days. You will have a compression garment that holds the new implants in place so the incisions can heal. You will need to sleep on your back for a week or more to avoid putting excessive pressure on any area of your new breasts.

You will see your breasts for the first time when your surgeon removes the compression garment and bandages. However, it will take several weeks for the swelling to go down and up to six months before it has entirely resolved.

I was recommended to Dr. Morris through my doctor at BID-Needham. Due to prior surgeries, I had some issues and Dr. Morris is the best. He has done a fantastic job with my abdomen core and I feel and look fantastic.
